Johnston: Work Ethic Lacking Today

I was raised with a work ethic that, quite simply, consists of working hard and being rewarded with a paycheck. I don’t require the constant validation and praise that the self-esteem movement of the 1990s brought to my generation of workers. The self-esteem movement, of course, was the idea that everyone is a winner and, regardless of how small or meaningless an action is, should be met with great praise and a gold star. For example, at lunch the other day I overheard a young man, quite obviously a college student, complaining to the person on the other end of his cell phone about how terrible his current employment situation was. The complaints were loud and quite fervent, ranging from his job’s training policy to how he never gets any bonuses. The icing on the cake was how unfair it is that his boss can afford a new car but can’t afford to give him a raise. Give me a break/ Henry Johnston , Moscow-Pullman Daily News. More here.

Question: Do young adults today have the same work ethic as those of 25 years ago?
