COUGARS
With no students in Pullman, the drive-through line at McDonald’s was empty last night, which, for me, constitutes one of life’s little victories. Washington State, on the other hand, isn’t looking for little victories this week. The Cougars would like two in the NIT, which would put them two-thirds of the way to New York, a place they have set their sights on. But first they have to get past Long Beach State. • Washington State: Talked with Marcus Capers, Klay Thompson and DeAngelo Casto yesterday concerning their previous NIT experience, the NCAAs and tomorrow’s game with Long Beach State. They all agreed the atmosphere at St. Mary’s two years ago was surprisingly intense, that there were some shocking teams announced Sunday and the 49ers will be a tough out. We’ll have their thoughts in our story we’ll post later today. … John Blanchette talked with Long Beach State coach Dan Monson last week prior to the Big West Conference tournament final. • Around the Pac-10: Derrick Williams was headed to USC, had signed his letter of intent and everything. Then Tim Floyd was fired. The Trojans let Williams out of his letter, the Southern California high school star headed to Arizona and the Pac-10 was changed. But it almost didn’t happen . … USC is in the NCAA tourney , sort of. … Michigan State is in the NCAA tourney , and many folks think that’s a travesty. … Washington is in the NCAA tourney , deservedly so. Their opponent, Georgia, will probably have the crowd on its side. Venoy Overton will be playing for UW. … UW women’s basketball coach Tia Jackson won’t be back next year. … Oregon plays host to Weber State tomorrow night in the CBI.
