It’s game day for WSU

COUGARS

It’s game day once more in the Palouse, and with the students back in town after spring break in, well, wherever, the crowd at Beasley Coliseum should be a little more energetic than the NIT opener against Long Beach State. A little. Though the 4,000 or so that were there last week did the best they could. Read on for more.

• Washington State : We had an advance in today’s S-R focusing on the lone time these teams have met in the past. And what the NIT means to this team. Simple enough. … There is an Oklahoma State side of the story as well. … Otherwise, that’s it for hoop. With spring break over, the football team returned to campus last night for a team barbecue, then they’ll hit the practice field against starting Tuesday afternoon – my favorite Moody Blues’ song, by the way.

• Around the Pac-10: We wrote a bit yesterday about one call making a huge difference in a game, oftentimes a call that hardly registers on the radar. Well, that wasn’t the case in Arizona’s hang-on victory over Texas yesterday. There was one key call. And everyone was talking about it afterward. And once again, it was a Pac-10 official, the best Pac-10 official in our eyes, in the middle of it. How fun. The Wildcats moved into a Sweet Sixteen showdown with Duke this weekend on the strength of a 70-69 win built, in large part, by Derrick William’s supporting cast. … The Huskies won’t be moving on. There has been more discussion of their come-from-ahead 86-83 loss to North Carolina in the past 24 hours than I want to relay, so we’ll stick with a couple game stories , a column or two , a notebook and a question . … One other Pac-10 team is playing tonight. The Oregon Ducks have another CBI game in Eugene, facing Duquesne.

• That is it for this morning. We’ll be back before the game tonight as usual. Until then …
