Walkers and drivers, team up
In response to “Look up. Be aware” (March 19), Gonzaga University is promoting a pedestrian safety campaign due to students’ injuries by cars since January. This is a widespread problem we all need to be aware of, drivers or pedestrians.
Having been hit by a car myself, I can assure you that this is not a problem of poor street marking. No, it’s both the pedestrian’s and driver’s responsibility.
We people on foot complain that drivers are not respecting our safety, but it is our fault if we are texting or looking down at our feet while we are crossing the street. On the other hand, drivers should be more alert, considering they are driving in an area with lots of students.
GU can extend the idea of “flashing red safety lights” even more so the majority of people will be more aware of this crisis.
The solutions for this problem must come from both sides. Drivers need to remember and follow the street rules wisely, and pedestrians need to be more conscious and make eye contact with the driver. This way both sides can work together for the best safety outcome.
