our mothers taught us. In my case, she insisted I learn to type. My mother’s reasoning was that every woman needed a business skill to rely on. Not me, of course. I was going to be an actress. Or a world traveler. Or, to be blunt, anything but a woman who would need to sit in front of a typewriter. She insisted. I resisted. finally submitted but only just passed my high-school typing class. Of course, now, as a writer, I spend hours each day with my fingers racing across the keyboard.
