Weekend Listening: Nirvana

Paul Dillon

What could’ve happened?

That’s the question I keep coming back to when I hear this rare song by Nirvana.

With lead vocals by drummer Dave Grohl, “Marigold” was recorded and released in 1993 by Nirvana as a B-Side to “Heart-Shaped Box” off of the album In Utero . All vocals and guitar were done by Grohl, who also recorded the drum parts. Krist Novoselic contributed bass but Kurt Cobain was absent during the production of “Marigold,” making it the only Nirvana song not fronted by Cobain.

Of course, Grohl would go on to form the successful Foo Fighters after Cobain’s suicide. Tons of young Nirvana fans would show up to early Foo shows and scream “Marigold!” out between songs, in hopes of hearing the one Grohl-penned Nirvana tune that existed. He never played it.
