Odd way to say thanks
All of us heard or read the media about how Osama bin Laden was taken down by members of the Department of Defense on May 1.
We all saw the reaction by Americans.
On May 9, an article appeared on the front page of The Spokesman-Review, detailing how Defense Secretary Robert Gates wants to save money by raising TRICARE (health care) rates for the military in the USA.
If Secretary Gates wants to save money, perhaps he should consider eliminating the covert payment of millions of dollars to corrupt Afghan politicians, heavily armed Iraqi warlords and Pakistani ISI double agents.
Budget cuts can be painful, but let us start with those cuts overseas, not at home. Don’t shake the hand of the SEAL Team 6 member with one hand, and eliminate his health care benefits as he turns away.
Sen. Patty Murray, Sen. Maria Cantwell and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers should be supporting their large constituencies by reminding Secretary Gates to keep military members, both retired and active duty, foremost in his mind.
