Another reminder: The Dude returns

As I noted last week, the Spokane International Film Festival is sponsoring a screening of “The Big Lebowski” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Magic Lantern. The show is part of SpIFF’s ongoing Professor’s Series , which already has featured such classics of contemporary cinema as “Pulp Fiction” and “Run Lola Run.”

“Lebowski,” which is a Coen brothers production, will be introduced by Pete Porter, who besides being a professor of theater and film at Eastern Washington University, and being a semiregular cohost of “Movies 101,” is SpIFF director. Oh, and he’s a freak for the Coens.

In fact, when I think of Pete — which I do on occasion — I think of JohnTurturro’s character, Jesus Quintana, in “The Big Lebowski.” You know, the guy who reacts to a bowling challenge as if he were Manolete facing a charging bull — with a curious kind of haughty style.

Not that Pete’s haughty. But he could be. Probably, with his knowledge of film, should be. Anyway, to find out, show up. Oh, the movie’s good, too.
