Police have tough job

What has happened to Karl Thompson and the Spokane Police Department is a travesty.

These men and women were hired and trained to protect and serve the community. Every day they put themselves in harm’s way. Every day they do not know if it will be the last time they will kiss their spouse or hug their kids.

It’s easy to be a Monday morning quarterback. However, when police respond they do so with the information they have available at the time. When police officers order someone to stop, civil society requires that they comply. That is the law.

They are not mind readers. When responding to a call, they do not always have the luxury of talking to someone to find out about their unique circumstances or disabilities before they react. We ask that our police be trained, be confident and make split-second decisions. But when they do, many criticize them for doing it.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Spokane! We should be thanking these officers for putting their lives on the line all day, every day.

We should be supporting them so they can continue to do their jobs to the best of their ability.
