Pettit right on initiatives

Stefanie Pettit, your Nov. 10 suggestion about initiatives was thought-provoking. You are echoing others’ concerns about who is writing the laws.

Some say the Legislature is slacking, not keeping an ear to the ground on issues important to the general public.

A huge part of the problem is that, apparently, the state Supreme Court ruled that lying in political ads is OK.

Is this a freedom of speech issue? One is not allowed to yell “fire” in a theater. Why should anyone be allowed to lie about issues as important as our laws?

It is no wonder you were confused as to how to vote. A few lawyers have gerrymandered our laws so that every issue is subject to debate, not necessarily based on what is best for our state, country or whatever. Throw in lying, and everyone is confused.

I have several lawyer friends, so I am not lawyer-bashing.

It is not incumbent on the voting public to understand all the legalese. It is incumbent upon our elected officials to be honest and truthful.

It is also incumbent upon our news sources to make certain the truth is known.
