The Slice: Great manners, even if misplaced

Judy McKeehan’s 4-year-old granddaughter, Mary Kate, went to a birthday party.

The little girl came home with a small bag of candy.

To keep her little sister, Luce, from accessing it, Mary Kate put it somewhere up high.

“Apparently not high enough,” said McKeehan. “Because soon her little sister came into the living room drooling chocolate.”

Little Luce was reprimanded and placed in “time out.”

When she had served her sentence, her mother asked what she had to say to her big sister about getting into her candy.

Here was a chance to demonstrate remorse and show that she was learning some manners.

Luce smiled and said, “Thank you.”

Warm-up question: When talking about one of their adult children, which are modern parents in the West least likely to say?

A) “He took up with a saloon gal.” B) “She ran off with a ranch hand.” C) “He’s working as the town drunk over in Shinbone.” D) “Last we heard, he was hauling a load of nitro and got amnesia.” E) “He’s working on a post-graduate degree in no-account studies.” F) “Funny you should ask. We’re expecting her in on the noon stage.” G) “He got mixed up in that range war between the environmentalists and the sod busters.” H) “He was working as a medicine man/snake oil salesmen but got bit by a rabid dog and then got into corporate marketing.”

Today’s Slice question: Which of the following might be included in a real pass report and which are actually “Star Trek” hazards?

A) “There is drifting snow and traction tires are required.” B) “Motorists are advised to be on the lookout for tachyon particles.” C) “Snoqualmie Pass has been closed due to tetryon emissions.” D) “There are reports of away vehicles being drawn into the nebula. Tractor beams are advised.” E) “Chains required.” F) “A rift in the space-time continuum has Stevens Pass traffic backed up to 1969.” G) “There is a 50 percent probability of antimatter containment failures on Lookout Pass.” H) “Progress is slow on Snoqualmie Pass due to the presence of the Borg. Resistance is futile.”

That’s correct. You got them all right.
