What kind of country?
I come from an old military family. Since the 1600s, we have been imbued with “Duty, Honor, Country,” to love our country, and respect and protect our fellow Americans. We take seriously the Constitution’s preamble to “… establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty. …”
That means that beyond our military obligation, we are to care for the people, feed the hungry, care for the sick and most vulnerable, and clothe the needy. We do this by voting and paying the “necessary and proper” taxes.
Shall we keep faith with “the People” or shall we abandon them in favor of profit for international corporate interests, many of which have foreigners on their boards of directors who are hostile to the American people? Caring for the less fortunate is not only the ethical or religious thing to do; it should be the American thing to do.
It is time to think hard about what kind of country you want. If Americans are not a family, then why should me and mine sacrifice and go in harm’s way for the rest of you?
