The Slice: Readers still unleashed over droppings issue

I’m still hearing from readers regarding a Slice column about a young lady walking back to my patio and depositing some neatly bagged dog droppings in my trash barrel.

This subject brought out the abused pit bull in some of my readers. Anyway, here’s an updated summary of the feedback.

Some people hate dogs, which I do not understand.

Some people hate those who own dogs, which seems sad.

Some people who pick up after their dogs appear to wrap themselves in satisfied self-regard and are defensive about any suggestion that they don’t really deserve a medal.

Some dog walkers have a sense of humor.

Some who hadn’t bothered to actually read the column (but heard about it) nonetheless phoned to berate me for confronting the young lady. That never happened.

Some inferred that I do not like dogs. Please.

Some dog walkers think trash barrels out by the curb are fair game for bagged droppings. I tend to agree, though in summer at least I’d prefer that folks take the goodies home with them.

Some accused me of sounding like a “private property” nut. Fair point.

Some accused me of representing the unappealing “Get off my lawn!” side of Spokane. Fair point.

Some noted accusingly that I like cats. Guilty.

Some acknowledged that sometimes bagged droppings can make dealing with your trash barrel rather unpleasant until the next garbage pickup day.

Some suggested that I address matters of greater import. Somehow I don’t think earnest hand-wringing six days a week is what most of my readers crave.

Some signed their names or left same on phone messages.

Some probably assumed that they were the only reader to write “Boy, you really stepped in it this morning.”

And some who were critical of my taking umbrage at the patio drop-off were impressively civil in suggesting that the column in question was something that should be scooped into a plastic bag.
