Deregulation misunderstood

Re: Ms. Penna’s Sept. 23 letter:

Yes, regulations are necessary for public safety regarding police, fire protection, etc. However, when regulations are overbearing, liberty and freedom are threatened. Also, the Constitution is violated when regulations go beyond government rights. Ask anyone who has lived in a country where regulations are used for control and he or she will tell you that we are at a precipitous point.

Conservatives do not want to see children locked out of education, businesses so regulated they cannot function, and truly helpless people ignored. They seek efficiency and accountability, both of which do not occur in big government control. The systems need to be reworked.

However, this has been misconstrued to paint conservatives as cruel and inhumane. That is simply not true. Also not true is that no good options have been proposed; they are ignored and considered more negativism on the part of conservatives.

It is clear to many of us that we are at a dangerous place where big government is the only answer. This is a dangerous place that will lead us down a slippery slope. The people employ the government and should not be at the mercy of government power.
