I-1163 unnecessary

Voters will make a decision this fall on how they’ll vote on Initiative 1163. With this union-backed initiative, SEIU tries to dupe the voters once again into thinking the state’s home care workers are providing care to our elderly and disabled without the benefit of criminal history background checks or training.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Both are already mandated by existing state law. This initiative will cost taxpayers an additional $80 million over the next two years. The way to pay for it is by cutting other social programs or by raising taxes.

We face some of the worst economic times in our state’s history. Do we really need a union-backed initiative that we can’t afford and, more importantly, don’t need? The voters were duped with Initiative 1029, which was postponed because there was no way to pay for it.

Now Initiative 1163, the “son of I-1029,” is right on its heels. Let’s hope the voters are not duped a second time. Vote no on I-1163.
