No religious tests
People who are concerned about Mitt Romney’s religion (“Religion re-emerges for 2012 race,” Oct. 9) when it comes to making their decision on whether or not to vote for him should first read Article VI in the Constitution: “The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”
All the Republican candidates believe in an invisible man in the sky; who cares which one they believe in?
I know there are many religious figures and people on the right who try to rewrite history by saying that we’re a Christian country founded on Christian values. I challenge you to find the words “God” or “Christian” anywhere in the Constitution or Bill of Rights.
I would argue we’ve become a Christian nation, but the Founding Fathers were very clear on this issue.
Also Google: First Amendment Bill of Rights and the Treaty of Tripoli, Article XI.
