It’s Neachen Bay

I read Dale Roloff’s letter (“S-word offensive, too” – Oct. 27) and his examples, leading with Squaw Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene.  Perhaps it has been some time since Mr. Roloff visited our beautiful lake, but Squaw Bay was renamed a few years ago. The name (and signage) was changed to Neachen Bay; Neachen was a Native American deer hunting method used, in which deer were driven into the lake.

If Mr. Roloff looked at some of the old maps of Lake Coeur d’Alene, he would also see an N-word label for a point near Arrow Point.  It would appear Gen. Carlin, who was stationed at Fort Sherman back in the day and named many of the locations on the lake, was expressing himself based upon his Illinois upbringing.

You no longer see the N-word or the S-word used as names on Lake Coeur d’Alene, so now Mr. Roloff needn’t look any farther than his own backyard. Hopefully some of the other locations he cites will follow Coeur d’Alene’s example and make these needed changes.

Coeur d’Alene

( Editor’s note: Squaw Bay was changed to Neachen Bay in 2007.)

We have known, worked with and supported Mike Padden for many years. We have found him to be a man of principle who acts on what he believes.

Mike believes we need a growing economy to provide jobs for ourselves and our children. He knows high taxes and over-regulation have harmed our businesses, and advocates a special session dedicated exclusively to the repeal of onerous laws and regulations. Mike will work to reduce the business and occupation tax and oppose attempts to increase taxes.

Mike believes government has grown careless with our hard-earned dollars, and needs to be held accountable. He will work for agency audits, streamlined business practices and cost-savings.

Mike believes a well-educated and skilled population will attract more businesses to the region. He will work for more education dollars in the classroom, more local control and increased partnering with businesses.

Mike believes in the value of each human being and that the vulnerable from pre-born to our oldest citizens need protection. He supports organizations like Meals on Wheels and Life Services. He will work to eliminate fraud so help gets to those who need it.

We urge you to join us in choosing Mike Padden for 4th District state senator.
