Cuts not creating jobs

Everybody wants our politicians to get back to concentrating on jobs. OK, let’s encourage them to do just that. But, let’s start with honestly looking at the problem first.

There is a school of thought that if you just deregulate enough or cut taxes enough that somehow businesses will magically start hiring workers again.

We tend to forget that businesses need consumers of their products, whether goods or services. Now, this might come as a shock to some people, but government employees at every level are also consumers.

It’s not a zero-sum game. You don’t automatically create one private sector job for every government job you eliminate. To think that government at any level is inefficient is one thing; to have a gut-level hatred of government is another.

The face of government is not some nameless bureaucrat; it’s a teacher, firefighter, police officer, and yes, a USDA food inspector.

We’re shedding government jobs at every level like mad. And, of course, our rich “job creators” are taking up the slack, right? As someone would say, “How’s that working for you?”
