Flier misleads on levies

We are very supportive of the Mead School District and the fiscal responsibility they have demonstrated while still providing a quality education for students in north Spokane.

We were saddened today by a flier we received from Citizens for Responsible Taxation, and the misleading claims that were made related to the upcoming maintenance and operations levy on Feb. 14.

The levy provides for approximately 26 percent of the operating budget for the district for the years 2013-2015. As homeowners in the Mead School District, we are well aware that the levy will not create a property tax increase, and most likely we will see a decrease from the taxes we are currently paying this year.

I understand Duane Alton, a resident of Liberty Lake, provides the funding for Citizens for Responsible Taxation. Alton will need to speak for himself as to his motives.

No matter what our age or whether we have children in school, we leave no community legacy more significant than the opportunity for children to have a quality education. It is the obligation of the Mead School District to provide that education in a fiscally responsible manner. We feel that they have clearly met that test.
