First, to answer the question Vince posed in his Wednesday post about breaking in a baseball glove — I was partial to whatever grease it is that Rawlings sells in those little bottles. Soak the pocket in that, tie a string around it and throw it under the mattress each night for a week, plus frequent games of catch during that time, and that seemed to do the trick. Of course, I was a second baseman and only played until I was 15 — plus intramural softball in college — so my leather needs were fairly low-maintenance, plus I preferred the feel of a more-than-well-worn glove, anyway. It must run in the family. On the rare occasions my dad and I play catch these days, he still uses the old Wilson mitt he wore as a teenager. … We have our usual Thursday glance at the weekend — though this week, obviously, there’s no game for another two days — as well as some content in this local basketball notebook. Also, we recapped Ken Bone’s press conference yesterday on the blog . … Washington is led by four guards. … Former WSU quarterback and quarterbacks coach Timm Rosenbach was named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Montana on Wednesday. … As of Wednesday, 5,794 tickets had been sold for Saturday’s game, a figure that does not include the student section (which has a capacity of 3,500). Especially when you factor in the Camp Out Beasley event, which will likely encourage a large enough student turnout to fill their generous allotment. … Track story here about Galen Rupp and former Cougar Bernard Lagat. … The Cougars, along with eight other Pac-12 teams, are in support of multi-year scholarships. All scholarships awarded in WSU’s 2012 recruiting class will be one-year renewable, though.
