Redman goes with the flow
I was delighted to see the front-page story (Dec. 28) on Jamie Redman as she continues her multiyear rowing journey with the goal of representing the United States in the 2012 Olympics. While the article discussed the intense physical and mental aspects of Jamie’s training, it neglected to provide much insight into Jamie’s character beyond her determination to be the best she can as a world-class rower.
Jamie started rowing with the fledgling Spokane River Rowing Association eight years ago, when she was in high school. Most, if not all, of the other rowers were at least the age of her parents, but that didn’t deter Jamie. One morning shortly before 6 a.m., as we were waiting to start practice, Jamie said “Five o’clock is too early for a teenager to get up.” Her comment brought her age home to me. She fit in so seamlessly with the masters group that no one had given any thought to our age differences!
Jamie is a very unassuming and fine young woman. Not only should Jamie’s parents be very proud of her, Spokane should be proud to have Jamie representing our community and country in worldwide athletic competitions.
Best of luck, Jamie!
