Dow Closes Above 13,000
The Dow industrials powered past 13000, as investors celebrated signs Europe’s leaders are taking action to address the region’s debt troubles. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 187.73 points, or 1.5%, closing above 13000 for the first time since May 7. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index advanced 25.95 points, or 1.9%, to 1385.97, and the Nasdaq Composite added 64.84 points, or 2.2%, to 2958.09. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi is trying to win over European policy makers on a plan to strengthen the euro zone’s financial health, according to news reports. U.S. stocks accelerated Friday’s gains on the news, which said that Mr. Draghi will meet with the head of Germany’s Bundesbank in coming days, and that he is also discussing the potential for bond purchases, further interest-rate cuts, and long-term loans to banks/ Wall Street Journal .
