Pac-12 tournament is set
COUGARS
FROM LOS ANGELES — WSU had the day off yesterday while the rest of the Pac-12 tournament seeding shook itself out. We have a look at what lies ahead this week after the jump.
…
The Pac-12 regular season championship was decided on Sunday in rather fitting fashion — with a contender losing a game it really needed to win. And we’re not even talking about Arizona’s stunning loss at Arizona State. California’s loss at Stanford allowed Washington to claim the conference title outright, and the Huskies will be the tournament’s No. 1 seed. What does that mean for the Cougars? Well, nothing, if they don’t beat Oregon State on Wednesday. But if they do, it means they’ll get a third crack at UW, which swept the season series from WSU in two games the Cougars had every chance to win. Some WSU fans may have been rooting for Cal because the Cougars beat the Bears this year, but I think UW may be a better matchup for WSU at this point — a big night from Faisal Aden guided WSU to that win over Cal, and it was at home, too. If the Cougars had simply made a few more free throws, they’d have a win over Washington under their belt already. The Huskies don’t sound particularly thrilled about the prospect of a rematch with either OSU or WSU, for what it’s worth. … The all-conference teams should be announced some time today. I’d expect to see Brock Motum’s name on the first team, DaVonte Lacy’s name on the all-freshman team, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Reggie Moore is at least as an honorable mention (as the conference assists leader, he probably deserves that much). … The WSU athletics website has a tournament central page .
As for yesterday’s action …
Stanford 75, California 70 : A killer loss for the Bears, obviously, who could have shared the Pac-12 title with Washington with a win (and would have earned the No. 1 seed into the conference tourney via tiebreaker). The win was meaningless for the Cardinal in the standings .
Arizona State 87, Arizona 80 : Huh? 87 points? Really? This happened? Another real head-scratcher on the final day of a conference season full of them. Arizona probably needs to win the Pac-12 tournament to get into the NCAAs now. ASU’s best game of the season allowed them to ruin the Wildcats’ day.
Oregon’s shiny arena didn’t generate as much revenue as hoped this season. … Colorado is going back to the drawing board . … Tim Floyd defends Ben Howland. … The Pac-12 tournament could be pretty wild. …
