Deputies’ Group Wants New Commish

The Kootenai County Deputy Sheriff’s Association is asking voters to turn out the two Republican Kootenai County commissioners seeking re-election this year. In a press release sent out Wednesday, the association urges voters to support Vic Holmes and Tim Herzog rather than incumbents Todd Tondee and Dan Green in the commissioner races. Citing the loss of about 150 county employees during the last year, the association said, “We found it necessary to seek out and endorse candidates committed to open and transparent government, who possess positive and effective leadership qualities and a high level of integrity.” Also the association has endorsed Prosecutor Barry McHugh and Fritz Wiedenhoff for the House District 2B seat now held by Rep. Phil Hart. The association said it will hold off making an endorsement in the sheriff’s race until after the May 15 primary because there are several Republican and Independent candidates who “have the knowledge and relevant law enforcement experience to be successful and effective leaders.” Full news release here.

Question: Is it risky for the sheriff’s deputies to take a position against 2 incumbent county commissioners?
