The Slice: There’s always a need for Red Bull X-fighters

The Deer Park Middle School newspaper polled students on their vocational aspirations.

The careers mentioned included DJ, NBA player, dentist, Red Bull X-fighter, circus performer, BMX rider, professional roper, lawyer, makeup specialist and doctor.

In other news, kids said they prefer Chevy trucks to Dodge and Ford.

Slice answers: “I get the most compliments when I wear dark teal or royal blue,” wrote Marlys Buzby. “Apparently both colors look especially good with my fake red hair color.”

Nadine Joubert said she realized many years ago that the only time men smiled at her was when she wore shades of purple. “I was told later that this is because purple brings out the passion in men.”

So she now wears purple about once a year.

Another adventure in babysitting: “Carolyn Lamberson’s story about forgetting the baby at home reminded me of a similar, but worse, situation when I was 11,” wrote Laurie Newell.

On an evening when her parents were out, Newell was keeping an eye on her four younger siblings.

“We had all been watching TV and about the time it started to get dark I noticed my 2-year-old sister wasn’t around.”

Newell deployed her siblings and they searched the house. No luck.

“So I left my 9-year-old sister in charge and began ringing doorbells up and down the block. Nobody had seen a 2-year-old wandering the neighborhood.”

Newell then called a neighbor mom, to ask for advice. That woman wasn’t home.

“I wondered if I should call the police but wasn’t sure how to do that. So we made one last search of the house.”

The 2-year-old was found sound asleep on the floor under the parents’ bed.

“Things may have appeared fairly normal when my parents got home, but I think I aged at least five years that evening.”

Local angle: “So, am I the only one who noted the passing references to LaCrosse, Wash., made by Sue Sylvester in Tuesday night’s two-hour ‘Glee’?” asked Kathy Vogler, who happens to have a LaCrosse mailing address.
