The Slice: Religiously speaking, it seems fair to ask

You’ll have to take it on faith that this question arises out of simple curiosity.

Do ex-Catholics outnumber ex-Mormons in our area?

Slice answers: “In my opinion, the heyday of cool FM radio in Spokane was during the late 1970s and early 1980s with the station KREM-FM, which was an awesome album rock station,” wrote Tim Freeman.

“All the cool guys listened to KREM,” wrote Mike Kelleher.

“KREM-FM was as close to what you were describing as Spokane ever got,” wrote Ted Wert. “Auto guru Don Adair was the program director and one of the deejays.”

After the station was sold in the mid-’80s and acquired different call letters (KZZU) and a new format, Patty Speranzi did the only thing she could think of to note the end of an era. “I sent a sympathy card to the station. I felt I lost a family member.”

Watching war movies: “Do I comprehend what my Dad and others past and present have gone through?” wrote Tracie Tharp Hogeboom. “No, but because of movies like ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and (the HBO series) ‘The Pacific,’ I can honestly say that I have a deeper understanding of their commitment to preserving my freedom.”

More man-candle fragrance suggestions: “Freshly greased leather firefighting boots (preferably White’s).” – Barb Montgomery

“Baseball field grass.” – Phil Seifert

“Russian olive trees.” – Charlie Kramer

“That gunpowder smell you get after a big fireworks display.” – J. Scott Miller

“The old Hostess bakery down near the courthouse.” – Mike Carlson

“Loaded nachos.” – Julie Shepard-Hall

“First grade paste.” – Greg Wold

“Grampa’s garage.” – Tadashi Osborne

What far-away grandkids could call their Inland Northwest grandfather: “PapaCoeur,” said Cindy Matthews.

Red alert: “I know you have discussed asparagus and the resulting odoriferous effects,” wrote Pam Pierson. “Do you dare touch beets and their side-effects?”
