McKenna gets high marks

My ears perk up whenever I hear the word “education,” especially in a political discussion. Few other issues have as much impact on my profession – real estate – as our schools. Few other issues have as much impact on our neighborhoods as education.

I’ve been hearing about education a lot recently in the campaign for Washington governor between Rob McKenna and Jay Inslee. The former candidate is offering an idea to improve education in our state, the latter candidate nothing.

McKenna is supporting a plan, originally proposed by a Democrat, that would place the responsibility for funding public education in Washington more on the state and less on local districts, which is what our constitution requires. A statewide property tax rate means high population and high property value areas of the state such as Bellevue would pay proportionally more toward public education than low population and low property value areas such as Deer Park.

Please consider our children and our future when you make your choice for governor. Know that McKenna is offering an innovative and thoughtful solution to funding public education. Inslee is offering criticism and chaff. Our schools, and we, deserve better.
