Address college drinking

Every couple of weeks this fall I’ve read about an injury and even a death due to the out-of-control drinking at our public universities. So, I was glad to see the Nov. 17 front page article “Sobering Statistics” focus on this problem.

The story had more information on college drinking, but it gave no solutions. It seems everyone thinks nothing can be done, which I find hard to believe.

I have a son who’s a freshman at Whitworth University. There, they have been largely successful at preventing drinking in the dorms. I can sleep weekends, knowing that my son is probably studying instead of getting drunk.

Why are we waiting until more students are injured or die from alcohol abuse at our public universities before something is done?
