He was worth his weight

I was disappointed but not surprised to read in The Spokesman-Review that the mayor decided to eliminate our city’s one-person Weights and Measures Department. A local TV news program had a report that asserted our city, by having such a dedicated employee, saves local consumers about $32 million. I have no idea if this figure is accurate, yet it is a significant amount.

Pushing the work onto the state is wrong. Our state has its own problems. The city’s annual weights and measures check is much better for local consumers. That cannot be denied. If the City Council approves this bad budget proposal, every time I stop before a gas pump, every time the grocery clerk puts a food item on a scale, I will remember what those elected city officials did.

I thank the person doing this vital work.
