Need brake on spending

Where did Niles Schomburg (Sept. 7) ever get the idea that raising the debt limit is mandatory? The debt limit is supposed to keep government from overspending. The United States’ credit rating was downgraded because of overspending. What good is a debt limit if we just keep raising it? I don’t think my credit card company would go along with that.
