War memorial overdue

At the end of World War II, Spokane County erected a memorial listing the names of residents who served in the Armed Forces. The memorial was made of wood and deteriorated in time and was taken down, to be rebuilt in marble. Never happened.

Since then, three more conflicts have occurred. To date, Spokane County has lost 1,428 from World War I to Iraq. A proposed memorial at the memorial coliseum was in the works. The research of names was completed, design work done, three scrapbooks of articles and names were completed.

All that was left to do was to raise the money. It is with regret that the community’s interest was not there to devote the freedom we know today.

North Central High School is the only school in Spokane that has an up-to-date memorial of graduates. One received the Congressional Medal of Honor (Vietnam).
