Hux Redux: Clegg To File For Sheriff
In the SR file photo, then Kootenai County Sheriff Pierce Clegg addressed a group of off-road vehicle users.
From my SR files of 25 years ago: Hayden Lake-area Democrat Pierce Clegg launched his second camp0aign for sheriff Tuesday, promising to be a hands-on administrator who isn’t afraid to meet local residents. Clegg, 35, owner of the recently opened Alpine Country Story, north of Hayden, announced his candidacy accompanied by his wife, Lois, and his publicist Dick Hyneman. “I’ll be a working sheriff,” Clegg promised, criticizing Republican incumbent Merf Stalder for ignoring outlying areas. “I’m not afraid to get out and set an example.” Stalder has announced plans to seek a third, four-year term. A former sheriff’s deputy, Clegg lost to Stalder four years ago in a three-way race that also included independent Ronald R. Hoye Sr. Stalder outpolled Clegg 14,408 to 9,777/ DFO (April 13, 1988)
Question: Do you remember either Stalder-Clegg race?
