Poor argument hurts poor
In her March 26 letter, Carleen Reilly suggests that undocumented immigrants “get much more than our poor here in the United States.” In a time when there is talk of reducing SNAP (food stamps) and other safety-net programs, we want to applaud Reilly’s concern for the poor.
Nevertheless, her inaccurate statements about immigrant benefits run the risk of fueling us-vs.-them-type thinking so that we forget that we are all God’s creatures.
