Scrooges in Spokane
Judging by recent letters to The Spokesman-Review from folks objecting to government-sponsored charity, we have Scrooges in Spokane. Bah, humbug! Are there no orphanages, no work houses?
Actually, work houses might not be such a bad thing if things get any worse in this country. After decades of outsourcing jobs to other countries, demoting the middle class lower, we have an economy where a large number of people are poor.
The latest possibility involves sending slaughtered American chickens to China to be processed there and returned to us for sale. Great idea. Bird flu, anyone?
Private or individual charities could never take care of all of the needy. Judging by the mail I get every day, they are overwhelmed.
