Never too old to serve
In regards to “Graduates’ service rate speaks well of region” (Feb. 6), I wonder what influence that great Washington State University graduate Tom Tully, from Tacoma (played by John Candy), and featured in the movie “Volunteers,” has had on the volunteerism of Northwest graduates?
As a fellow WSU grad who has seen the jungles of Southeast Asia, that inspirational rendition of the Cougar Fight Song while marching through those jungles helped motivate me to a couple of AmeriCorps tours (I’d seen enough of the jungle). From my perspective, the service is great, and you don’t have to be a recent grad to do it.
It can be just the thing for a recent retiree.
