Widen theater coverage

I was excited to see your recent “Winter Arts Preview,” and commend your promotion of artistic offerings from popular venues such as the Spokane Civic Theatre, Interplayers, and the Lake City Playhouse. Unfortunately, I was also angered by your exclusion of upcoming productions from several other local companies.

Many local theaters, including Ignite! Community Theatre, Liberty Lake Community Theatre and Stage West, are not only producing worthy entertainment but also need and deserve the prominent exposure that could have been afforded by inclusion in this piece. Recently, Ignite!’s well-received production of “Rumors,” despite repeated efforts, received no coverage from The Spokesman-Review other than the calendar. Unfortunately, this seems to be just business as usual for The Spokesman.

While I know that there is only so much column space to go around, virtually every offering from the “Big 3” gets prominent previews and/or reviews. There is so much artistic talent in this area that many don’t get the opportunity to be involved with Civic or Interplayers, but are getting that chance through one of these other fine companies.

Unfortunately, many local theatergoers will never know of their opportunity to witness those efforts due to your failure to provide balanced coverage for all.
