Brooks Kicks Up Dust On Labrador
At the Lewiston Tribune, Editorial Page Editor Marty Trillhaase comments on a flap re: immigration between Congressman Raul Labrador of New York Times conservative columnist David Brooks. Trillhaase contends that Labrador’s inability to compromise on immigration after once being part of negotiations for a solution on the sensitive issue offers proof that the ideological congressman isn’t ready to become governor of Idaho:
A governor does not have the luxury of being an ideologue - or even an idealist. He doesn’t have 534 other House members and senators - or 105 Idaho legislators - to hide behind. There is one governor. He has to make the system work. A legislator has a philosophy. A governor faces consequences. Legislators can sit on the sidelines. If there’s a deal to be cut, a governor has to make it. If not, someone else in the Legislature will fill the void and the governor will become marginalized. Or he’ll be assigned responsibility for the stagnation that comes with policy paralysis. More here.
Question: Is Raul Labrador too ideologically rigid to be a good governor?
