Emailer: Go Slow On Ordinance
A Libertarian-leaning individual offers these thoughts re: the proposed antidiscrimination ordinance:
This ordinance though does make me somewhat nervous with the possible cost and threat of jail time to an individual/business. I guess my somewhat libertarian side feels that government shouldn’t force an individual or private business to hire or have to accept a gay couple living on their property, if they think it goes against their religious beliefs, but yet I still feel for the many gay people that have struggled to come out to society. I know it is not easy for them at all. How would you feel if you pastor owned a few rental units and felt strongly in not renting to an unmarried couple or gay couple because of his religious beliefs? How do you feel if a Christian book store owner didn’t want to hire a gay person? … The whole transgender thing with using bathrooms or open bathrooms is also a whole other subject, that I can’t fully wrap my head around. I do think this ordinance could start with all government or county own property and functions, but I think there needs to be a serious dialogue exchange when it comes to private businesses or property.
DFO: I’ve asked Christie Wood for a copy of the proposed ordinance (which wasn’t available Friday) and I’ve specifically asked about the penalty for violating the ordinance.
Question: Do you think individuals should face possible jail time for violating this ordinance, if passed?
