It’s a personal decision

In her May 26 letter, Cheri Heath said she was “amused” by the letters criticizing the shock-value abortion images displayed at Bloomsday. Well, I’m struck by the irony and hypocrisy that people can bring to this issue.

Terminating a pregnancy or not is a very personal matter, hopefully arrived at after much thought and discussion, and without coercion. But make no mistake: Sometimes abortion is exactly the right decision. Let me repeat that: Sometimes abortion is exactly the right decision.

The irony is that many anti-abortion people don’t really care about the welfare of children, but rather about their own viewpoint. They don’t care if some children are unwanted, unloved, neglected, abused, abandoned or even murdered. They just want them around to have these experiences.

I particularly noted the utterly inane comment that “children of abortion supporters deserve to know why their parents considered it OK to kill them while they were waiting to be born.” Obviously, being holier-than-thou is not hampered by rational thinking.

Abortion is not something that should be utilized frivolously, but it is also an option that should remain safe and available when that is the appropriate decision.
