Senators squelch charity

I’ve been considering a contribution for Oklahoma disaster relief. What’s caused my procrastination is the reaction to federal support of Oklahoma’s high-profile senators, James Inhofe and Tom Coburn.

Inhofe, who loudly voted against disaster relief for Sandy, early on tried to explain how the Oklahoma disaster was different and deserving of federal help. Coburn, who has consistently demanded discretionary spending (programs for the poor) offsets for any money used for disaster relief, talked of Oklahoma’s fierce independent spirit and self-reliance, telling a “Morning Joe” audience that people can send money if they like but, essentially, we can take care of ourselves.

Well, Coburn sealed it for me. Don’t get me wrong, I am generous and empathetic when it comes to people suffering acts of God. I gave for Katrina and Sandy, for Kobe and Fukushima. But, I appreciate being appreciated. So, I’m going to spend my money closer to home. We have local charities that can always use more help.
