Sequester Cancels Thunderbirds Show
The Thunderbirds precision flying team has canceled its Spokane appearances in May, citing budget cuts that
likely will also doom what was supposed to be the return of the popular SkyFest air show this year to Fairchild Air Force Base. A final decision on SkyFest is still pending, base officials said, but the Thunderbirds already have canceled their scheduled appearances for the remainder of the year. “The implementation of across-the-board cuts in federal spending has caused the curtailment of the Thunderbirds 2013 show schedule,” the precision flying team announced on its website. The cuts, referred to in Washington, D.C. as a “sequester,” took effect March 1 when Congress was unable to agree on a way to avoid $1.2 trillion in automatic across-the-board spending cuts through 2021. The amount that must be cut from the current year’s budget is about $85 billion/
