Police Catch Kidnap Suspect

At 12:09 p.m. Sunday, while searching areas around Tubbs Hill, local police found kidnapping suspect Doug Standish on the F dock of the Coeur d’Alene Resort Marina. Detectives noticed the cover of a 34-foot boat open. As they approached, the boat owner stepped out and said “He’s right here.” Standish walked out behind the owner and was taken into custody without incident. The owner told officers that he visited the marina Sunday to do boat maintenance. He saw Standish holding a gun when he opened the front galley area. He asked Standish to put down his gun and surrender and Standish complied. Standish was wet and cold from having been in the water the night before. He related to detectives that the previous night he got spooked by Coeur d’Alene Resort security guards doing their nightly rounds, so he jumped in water. He said he swam around to the other side of the dock until after the guards left and then he got back into the boat. More below.

Detectives continue to interview Standish about his whereabouts all week but some preliminary information is he was at the Resort Aviation pilot lounge yesterday (Nov. 9 th 2013) and was using their computers to send emails. Standish is familiar with aircraft and airports and went undetected by other pilots while in the lounge. Standish has been charged with kidnapping for the Nov. 4 incident in which he took a former girlfriend at gunpoint and held her against her will. Several hours later he let her out of her car near a law office in Coeur d’Alene so she could drop off some paperwork. She escaped and called police. Standish took off in her vehicle and it was later discovered in the 600 block of Hubbard Avenue. Standish indicated to detectives he was upset over their breakup. The investigation is continuing and no further information is available at this time.
