Builders support the community

In the April 6 letter “Enforce Current Planning,” the author suggests the Spokane Home Builders Association (SHBA) needs a “serious attitude adjustment.” This begs the question: Just who are the 600-plus members of the SHBA needing this adjustment?

The SHBA is comprised almost entirely of small businesses like mine. We take serious financial risks and work incredibly hard, usually to earn slim margins that go to support our employees, subcontractors and families. Through our efforts, we construct high-quality, safe and affordable homes that generate economic opportunities and grow our community.

Annually, members contribute significant sums of money, time and supplies to support local charities. Additionally, our association maintains a scholarship fund to provide financial assistance for students in need, so that they may have an opportunity at a career in the building trades.

Finally, we do fight for smart public policies that protect our local economy, policies that defend the rights of citizens to choose how and where to live, and policies that expand access to affordable, safe and high-quality homes throughout our community.

Proudly, our association and its members continue to make the dream of home ownership a reality for growing numbers throughout the region.
