Earth Day is celebrated every April 22, though some events take place on the weekends before or after. The first Earth Day was in 1970. It was created in the U.S. to increase public awareness of environmental problems. Now, it’s celebrated every year by more than a billion people in 180 nations. Earth Day is credited with starting the environmental movement in the U.S. Governor Pat Quinn says he wants Illinoisans to get outdoors and involved in conservation and sustainability efforts in the state. He says every day should be Earth Day in Illinois and residents should work to make Illinois the greenest state in the nation.
