Four-month-old Ezra Dixon underwent a stem cell transplant at 8 weeks old after a newborn screening found he had severe combined immunodeficiency, or SCID, also known as “bubble boy” disease. His mother, Rachel Dixon, is a Spokane resident temporarily living in Arlington, Wash. Ezra was the first baby in the state to be diagnosed with the disease as a result of the newborn screening.
