Cougars maligned

I found the July 31 article regarding the attack on a horse, possibly by a cougar in the Deer Lake area, negative with the intent to create fear and hate toward cougars. Words such as “horse killed” imply the cougar killed the horse. The article goes on to state that, while very sad, the horse was euthanized later due to its injuries.

A map of the area where cougar sightings have occurred showed the Deer Lake area with the label “cougar kills horse.” This isn’t true. We need to realize that as our population expands, we are encroaching on the cougars’ territory.
