Flying not all that bad
Joan Kopczynski’s rant about flying (Nov. 30) includes name-calling and labeling of “middle-class slobs,” the “over-65 crowd,” and “families with screaming children” as those catered to by the airlines. Unless Kopczynski is in her 60s, I doubt she remembers the time she is romanticizing.
I, too, lament losing the days when baggage was checked as part of the fare and seats seemed wider, although I was not as wide. I didn’t particularly love wearing a linen dress, high heels, plus nylon stockings in the summer to travel. In contrast, I can wear travelers knits, sit up and read a book. Unfortunately, my titanium knee always sets off the alarm, so unless I’m scanned, I get probed. Flight charges change daily, so it’s a challenge to book at the right time.
But it’s not all that bad, and certainly doesn’t merit bashing middle-class slobs. Are we talking dress, or food dripping? What? The over-65 crowd, and families with screaming children. Imagine the horror of sitting next to a 65-plus-year-old middle-class slob with a screaming child.
