Girls at debate impress
I would like to compliment The Spokesman-Review on coverage of the recent “Rhetoric in the Ring” event, held to benefit the Rogers High School Speech and Debate Club. So many young people participate in programs beyond sports, and yet seldom receive much-deserved attention.
I attended the event, and was not at all surprised, but so proud of the four high school students who put their speaking skills on display. Reporter Jody Lawrence-Turner did a fine job of capturing the verbal combat between Spokane City Council members Ben Stuckart and Mike Fagan, and the two Rogers young men. However, perhaps due to space limitation, a significant part of the story went wanting.
Two young ladies, Rylee Cesal and Hana Knowlton, both Rogers juniors, also stepped into the ring to deliver three-minute, on-the-spot speeches that would have found most of the adults in the audience looking for cover. As a recent candidate for county office, I am not too proud to admit that I was a more than a little jealous of the girls’ ability to stand and deliver speeches with no prior prepping for the topics. So to Rogers Coach Cara Heath, Rylee and Hana, I say to you, “You go girls!”
