What was the best of 2014?
A GRIP ON SPORTS
I have one hope. I hope every one had a marry Christmas. … Wow. Talk about an interesting typo. I meant a “merry” Christmas. Even if the sports landscape was devoid of anything except NBA games. Read on.
• Nope, I didn’t want all of you to get married yesterday. Though Christmastime is a good time to get hitched. My parents did. Made it easy for my dad to remember his anniversary. Speaking of remembering things, you may remember I mentioned I would fill this week with the top events of 2014, local sports-wise. (And by local sports, I mean high school and college in the Inland Northwest along with Seattle pro sports.) I’ve made a list, but it’s up to you folks to check it twice. Let me know if I’ve missed anything. I’m just going to rattle the contenders off, then I’ll winnow it down to five in the next couple days. All these things happened in 2014: The Seahawks won the Super Bowl … Gonzaga Prep won the 4A girls basketball title. … The Mariners came within a game of the postseason. … The Sounders won the MLS Supporters’ Cup and the U.S. Open Cup. … The Cougars’ Connor Halliday threw for an NCAA-record 734 yards against California. … Pullman won another state 2A boys basketball title. … Eastern Washington won its third consecutive Big Sky Conference football title. … Colton’s boys and girls both won 1B basketball titles. … Gonzaga women’s basketball coach Kelly Graves, who led the Bulldogs to 10 consecutive WCC titles, left to coach the University of Oregon. … North Central ran to another 3A boys cross country title. … GU won the WCC men’s basketball title again and made the NCAA Tournament for the 16th consecutive year.

• WSU: A quiet day around the Pac-12 but it looks as if Utah will not only be looking for a defensive coordinator, but an offensive one as well.
• Gonzaga: We weren’t here yesterday, but we want to pass along Jim Meehan’s WCC advance that ran in the paper on Christmas Day. … You want to have a good laugh? Watch John Stockton’s new State Farm ads . I mean “Don Stockton’s” new State Farm ads. … Santa Clara has a basketball player who had a to pass tests of a different kind.
• Seahawks: Ho ho ho. The NFL gave Marshawn Lynch a Christmas present, playing Scrooge – or Grinch is you prefer – by fining Lynch $11,050 for his crotch grab last Sunday. I’m sure if Lynch ever spoke to anyone publicly about it, he would say it was worth it. … Luke Willson is become a real weapon for the Hawk offense. … Catching up, Russell Wilson was the NFC offensive player of the week, Bobby Wagner is a Pro Bowler, the injury report shrunk a bit, the Hawks are becoming the chic pick again and Nate Silver thinks the Hawks could be one of the best teams ever.
•••
• Kind of slim today, but let me know if you have any events to add to the list of 2014’s best. We’ll consider them. But I will admit, the Hawks winning the Super Bowl is the prohibitive favorite as No. 1. Until later …
