GOP convention kicks off Thursday

Big-name GOP heavyweights are hoping to unify and motivate members of the Idaho Republican Party during this week’s state convention in Moscow.

As many as 1,000 Republican delegates and their family members are expected to attend the biennial convention, which runs Thursday through Saturday at the University of Idaho’s Kibbie Dome.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, will headline the convention with an eye toward unifying the party, now that May’s divisive primary election is complete.

“The most important goal of this convention is to end the debate showing our differences and reestablish our common thread of being Republicans,” said Idaho Falls political organizer Damond Watkins, who represents the Gem State on the Republican National Committee. “There has been a great deal of attention on our primary, which is always an important part of our political process. But there is no doubt in my mind that our convention will bring us together and we will come out more unified, more dedicated and more geared up to win in November.” Read more.
